The Biggest Earthquakes in 2025
This map shows earthquakes above magnitude 6 recorded around the world in 2025. Select a circle to examine the event's magnitude, time, depth and coordinates.
Year: 2025 Magnitude: above 6 Events: …
Symbols and magnitude
Small circle: about M 6.1 Medium circle: about M 7.0 Large circle: M 8.0 or higher
Circle area increases with magnitude. The symbol size supports comparison, while each popup provides the exact recorded value.
Earthquakes occur when accumulated stress causes rocks to move suddenly along a fault, releasing energy that travels through the Earth as seismic waves. Many strong earthquakes are concentrated near tectonic plate boundaries, although damaging events also occur within plates. Magnitude measures the energy released at the source, while the effects at the surface also depend on depth, distance, local ground conditions and building vulnerability.
What to do during an earthquake
Drop to your hands and knees, take cover beneath a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops.
Stay away from windows, tall furniture and objects that could fall.
Remain indoors if you are already inside. Do not use lifts. If you are outdoors, move away from buildings, trees and power lines.
After the main shock, expect aftershocks and follow instructions from local emergency authorities.
Check for injuries and hazards such as fire, damaged electrical wiring, or gas and water leaks when it is safe to do so.
The map plots global earthquake epicentres recorded in 2025. Larger red circles represent higher magnitudes. Exact magnitude, time, depth and coordinates are available by selecting an event.
