Question 1

Does north have to be at the top of a map?

Accepted Answer

No. North-up is a widely used cartographic convention. A map can be oriented toward any direction as long as its orientation is communicated clearly.

Question 2

Why are most modern world maps north-up?

Accepted Answer

North-up became dominant through the history of European navigation, printing, surveying and atlas production. It is useful and familiar, but it is not required by geography or physics.

Question 3

Does rotating a map change the geography?

Accepted Answer

Rotation changes the visual frame, not the geographic relationships. Distances, directions on the surface and locations remain the same, while familiar shapes may suddenly feel unfamiliar.
