Maps deserve a museum built for how we see the world today.
The Museum of Maps is an independent digital museum of cartography, geography and spatial data. We create interactive exhibits that invite people to explore, question and understand the world.
Read our story ↓A map is a story about the world.
Maps carry knowledge, choices and imagination. This museum brings historical cartography, contemporary data, satellite imagery and geographic experiments into one place.
Every exhibit begins with a spatial question and offers enough context for a curious visitor, with the methodological care expected by a specialist.
Built by cartographers, developed through collaboration.
Founded by Dr Eugenia Sarafova, a cartographer, geospatial specialist, educator and entrepreneur with a doctorate in remote sensing, a decade of university teaching and extensive experience in GIS, spatial analysis and digital products.
The museum is developed with a small international team and a network of researchers, writers, designers, translators and technical collaborators.
Research before design.
Ask the geographic question
We examine sources, dates, coverage, methods and uncertainty.
Design for understanding
Projection, scale, colour and interaction serve the question.
Leave room for curiosity
Visitors can follow the story or explore independently.
Accuracy is part of the experience.
We prefer authoritative, openly licensed sources, distinguish evidence from interpretation and state limitations clearly. Historical maps retain their provenance and context; contemporary data retain their dates and methods.
Every exhibit is designed for phones as carefully as for large screens, with readable context and purposeful interaction.
